Operation Atalanta Bids Farewell to Dutch Warship HNLMS Groningen off Coast of Somalia

On Friday 27 November Dutch warship, HNLMS Groningen, completed her three month deployment with Operation Atalanta off the coast of Somalia.

During her deployment, HNLMS Groningen conducted counter-piracy patrols as well as joint training with Seychelles maritime forces.  She also provided protection to UN FAO vessel, MV kestrel, during the deployment of Fishing Aggregating Devices (FADs) along the coast of Somalia that will help to improve the catches of local fishermen.

Before she departed the sea area, HNLMS Groningen’s ship’s company gathered on the flight deck for an Operation Atalanta medal parade, during which the Commanding Officer, Commander Hansen, took the opportunity to thank and congratulate his crew by saying: ”This medal is a sign of the European Union’s appreciation of your good work and achievements.”

HNLMS Groningen is the first Dutch Off-shore Patrol Vessel to participate in the EU’s counter-piracy mission.  The ship has proven its capabilities as a versatile, agile platform, that is able to conduct a range of activities that have served to demonstrate the European Union’s commitment to the region and the strengthening of maritime security.
